Auto Accident Insights

As your trusted chiropractor, I have been giving out auto accident advice for years. Unfortunately, I now know, first hand, what it’s like to experience a car accident after being rear-ended this past weekend. A large pick-up lost his brakes and hit me, repeatedly, while I was stopped at a red light. I was driving my son’s small pick-up truck and it was pushed into the middle of the intersection from the repeated impacts. My head and neck jerked back and forth (classic whiplash) and I remember seeing a flash of light then suddenly overcome by the feeling of being in a tunnel. I was stunned and disoriented, but fortunately, one of the firemen who arrived at the scene was a long-time patient! He immediately recognized that I wasn’t my usual self and strongly recommended I get checked out right away and put me in the ambulance.

After a few hours in the hospital a CT scan ruled out any cervical fractures, fortunately. As a result of this experience, let’s just say I have moved one wrung up on the ladder of insight when it comes to personal injury accidents.

A friend who heard about the accident sent me an email which said, “By the way, the chiropractor who gave me advice about whiplash recovery after my accident was right on the money, so you should listen to him. That was you.”

Fortunately, my wife also firmly insisted that I follow my own advice and that evening and the next day I faithfully iced the affected areas off and on. I also started seeing a good chiropractor for my pain, stiffness, and recurring headache.

Here’s the point, if you are in an accident:

Get checked out as a precaution even if you think you are okay. An x-ray or CT scan is necessary to rule out fractures.

Apply ice, not heat, to affected areas for acute injuries. Twenty minutes on, an hour off. Do so right away so you don’t wake up the next morning stiff or in severe pain and unable to move your neck.

If symptoms arise that are worrisome, get in touch with your doctor or go to your local ER.

Rest.

See a chiropractor for palliative care to speed healing.

Dealing with insurance companies, rental cars agencies, tow yards, and the added paperwork adds insult to injury, literally, especially if you just don’t feel like yourself in the days following the accident. Take good care of your physical self to eliminate any pain as soon as possible. As a rule, the longer pain lingers, the more difficult it is to get rid of.

Finally, always wear your seatbelt. It makes a difference!
