There are a variety of injuries that can result when playing sports. Always remember to warm up properly to help avoid injury.


Strains are a common injury in muscles or tendons. Sometimes, just a slight twisting motion can cause an overextension of a joint. This can result in a tear to the muscles or tendons.

Sprains are a stretching or tearing of ligaments. These tears can be mild to severe and can result in simple discomfort or major swelling. Ankle sprains and knee sprains are among the most common types of sports injuries. Dr. Moramarco can help with these as well.

Overtraining can lead to a variety of problems. When joints are overused, it can lead to pain or sudden dysfunction. Any tendonitis is a common overuse injury. The tendon becomes inflamed from repetitive use. There are several types of tendonitis including:

  • Rotator cuff – this results in inflammation causing shoulder pain, or rotator cuff tendonitis.
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) – this occurs along the outside of the elbow.
  • Golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis) – when the tendons on the inside of the elbow cause problems.

Stress Fractures

Stress fractures, or fatigue fractures, occur when abnormal amounts of stress are placed on the bone, resulting in a hairline fracture. Dr. Moramarco has seen this type of fracture frequently in runners, hockey players, and gymnasts, to name a few. Those just starting out in a sport should take care to build strength and skill slowly. For example, if you begin running, add distance slowly.

Dr. Moramarco warns parents about having children overtrain for one particular sport . He has seen a growing increase in stress fractures in children over his nearly twenty-five years in practice. He warns against involvement in one sport exclusively for twelve months per year . This is when the likelihood of stress fractures in children arise. Cross training in another sport is always advised.
