The First Visit

On a patient’s initial visit to our chiropractic clinic, Dr. Moramarco will take a thorough history and chiropractic examination examination. He will take time to carefully listen to the patient’s concerns and answer questions.

After the Confidential Health History is complete, it is time for a review and conversation regarding current symptoms to determine the following:

  • The cause(s) of pain or the condition (trauma vs non-trauma)
  • Activities which incite or relieve pain
  • The character of the pain (sharp, dull, etc)
  • The location of pain
  • Is it radiating pain (referred pain)?

He will also inquire about past treatment successes and failures, family medical history, and past medical history, including previous surgeries, fractures, medical conditions, and medications.

The history helps determine if a patient is a candidate for chiropractic care. If there are no red flags indicating other medical attention is required, then the examination commences.

A Chiropractic Examination consists of the following:

  • Inspection – postural evaluation
  • Palpation – hands-on, evaluating for muscle spasm, pain, tenderness, and/or movement of the spine
  • Range of Motion – measuring movement in all planes to assess for restriction (lack of movement)
  • Orthopedic tests – assessing for joint/nerve/muscle involvement
  • Neurological tests – check for nerve dysfunction
  • Mensuration – measuring one side compared to the other ex. Girth of the right vs left arm – indicates muscle atrophy
  • Muscle Testing – assessing for normal vs weak muscle

Following the history and chiropractic examination, it will be determined if additional diagnostic testing will be necessary. X-ray and MRI are recommended when necessary, not always.

Once the history, exam, and all diagnostic tests are complete, a diagnosis is finalized, and a treatment plan for pain relief formulated.

Next comes an explanation of findings and recommended treatment plan, called the Report of Findings. Dr. Moramarco will let you know what to expect, including short- and long-term goals to ensure pain relief and stabilization (rehabilitation) of the condition.

He will answer the four most common questions patients have:

1)  What’s wrong (what’s my condition?)

An explanation is provided regarding your condition.

2)  Can chiropractic care help?

In treating patients for 27 years, Dr. Moramarco has seen numerous and all types  of musculoskeletal complaints. Years of experience make it possible for him to determine if a patient may benefit from chiropractic treatment fairly easily. If your condition can not be helped, you will be referred to the appropriate physician.

3)   How long will it take?

It depends on many factors, for example, how long you have had the condition, how severe your pain is, your age, your physical condition, etc. It will also depend upon the type of care you choose. We offer three types of care at our chiropractic clinic:

Relief Care Short duration for treatment – goal to reduce inflammation and provide pain relief; patient calls as needed.

Rehabilitation CareAfter the pain is gone or has subsided dramatically, then there is an option to proceed with rehabilitation care. This includes strengthening and stabilization of the weakened area. This phase reduces the risk of the condition returning or a re-exacerbation.

Maintenance CareMaintaining the correction achieved after relief and rehabilitation care is easy. Many patients in our office continue with this type of care. It’s considered preventive and typically not covered by insurance.

4)  How much will it cost?

That depends. If you have insurance coverage, we will explain exactly what your insurer will cover. If not, we will do our best to make sure you are able to get the care you need to get you out of pain fast.

Chiropractic Treatment

When treatment commences will depend upon your condition. Are you in severe acute pain? We don’t want you to suffer! Barring any contraindications, we will offer treatments to make you more comfortable.

Regular treatments in our chiropractic clinic include spinal manipulation/adjustment, ice/heat, physiotherapy modalities, cold laser therapy, traction, trigger point therapy (myofacial release), recommended supplements, rehabilitation exercises, self- care instructions, and, coming soon, a nutritional counseling option.

The length of sessions will depend upon each individual and his or her condition. Factors determining length of visits include severity of pain, type and stage of pain/injury, and phase of care. In the acute phase of care, visits may take up to 45 minutes to one hour; if the visit is for maintenance or wellness, perhaps only ten minutes.

The most important thing to remember is we don’t require long term commitments – you decide the extent of care you’d like.
