Frequency of Chiropractic Adjustments?

When it comes to the frequency of chiropractic adjustments, each person’s individual needs and overall health must be taken into account. Adjustments are recommended whenever you have a spinal misalignment. However, it is not always clear when your spine is misaligned, since a subluxation can be completely painless.

The best approach is to visit your chiropractor on a regular basis, just as you would regularly visit a dentist to have your teeth cleaned for good oral health and maintenance. The frequency of chiropractic adjustments is primarily based on your health and wellness goals, severity of spinal problems, and your response to treatment.

If you follow a healthy diet, get adequate amounts of exercise and have a low-stress lifestyle, then most chiropractors suggest a visit between once a month and semi-annually.  This will allow your chiropractor to treat any emerging subluxations and get rid of them before they become a problem. If you wait until you have pain, it will likely take more visits to remedy the problem if periodic chiropractic care is not part of your regular health routine.

Dr. Moramarco recommends adjustment frequency on a per-person basis because each case is different. After thirty years in practice, his experience has shown that his monthly patients rarely have severe or sudden attacks of back or neck pain. In general, patients who are adjusted regularly maintain better range of motion and experience less spinal degeneration.

Potential chiropractic patients should know that injury or some type of trauma may call for more frequent adjustments in the beginning, but that will taper off as healing occurs.  For minor to moderate subluxations, a single treatment may be sufficient to relieve pain.

The long-term success of chiropractic treatment for each individual will depend on how each person’s body reacts to the adjustments. When muscles, joints and ligaments are in excellent condition and a misalignment has been corrected, a patient may go for months before needing another adjustment.  On the other hand, when there is relentless stress on the body through repetitive motion or poor posture and/or muscle tone, then the body may require ‘training’ so that it more easily “holds” the improved alignment. This will happen with periodic adjustments.

During a chiropractic consultation, your local chiropractor should be able to indicate a treatment program which includes a home treatment plan and any necessary lifestyle modifications. It is at that point he/she will recommend frequency of adjustments to provide the most benefit. Once healing takes place, you may want to visit from time-to-time for maintenance to keep pain at bay and be on top of your game.
